Compassion Event reaches community
More than 2,500 men women and children converged on the Hammond, Indiana civic center on August 19th to receive food,
clothing, medical and dental care and a Gospel message. Hammond
First Assembly of God (Pastor J. Calaway) sponsored the event, Compassion 2001, as an outreach of its ministry InnerMission.
The ministry seeks to unite churches and compassion organizations to both meet the needs of hurting people in the community and minister to their souls. Residents who attended Compassion 2001 received a bag of groceries, clothing, free immunizations, physicals, vision screenings, dental care and marriage counseling.
Before that, though, people heard the gospel preached in a tent. Some of the preaching was in Spanish to accomodate Hispanics. Overall, more than 1,000 people made commitments to Jesus as Savior.
Compassion events are planned next summer in Hammond and Gary.
